A Message from the President

April 21, 2021

In the wake of the Derek Chauvin trial’s verdict and all that it represents, it is critical that we recognize and are sensitive to the anxiety, emotions, and profound weight of these tragic events on the lives of our SUNY College of Optometry family, especially our students and staff of color. During these emotionally charged and uncertain times, I would encourage you to engage and support your peers and colleagues, be a source of comfort and compassion, and reach out for help, if needed.

Like many of you, I have followed the trial proceedings intently, with angst and trepidation in the hope that justice would be served and affirm the voices and activism that have shed light on the critical issues of division and systemic racism plaguing our nation.  My wish moving forward is that the close of the trial represents not an end but a step forward in the journey towards building a just, equitable and inclusive society as we make strides as a College community to be part of the solution.

As we come to grips with the verdict and implications of the Derek Chauvin trial, I want to reiterate the commitment that the SUNY College of Optometry has to social justice and racial equity.

David A. Heath, OD, EdM
