Office of Graduate Programs and Research

The Office of the Associate Dean for Graduate Studies and Research is responsible for all college research activities and graduate programs. This includes oversight of the Graduate Program in Vision Science and other affilated graduate programs, as well as responsilibility for sponsored and non-sponsored research, adherence to federal and state regulatory guidelines, protection of human and animal research subjects, and related activities. In addition, individuals responsible for the machine shop, the electronics shop, and the animal care facility report directly to the Associate Dean.

Associate Dean: Duties and Responsibilities for Research

  1. Inform individuals of relevant funding sources and encourage submission of research grants.
  2. Regularly evaluate infrastructure support for research and make appropriate recommendations to the Dean.
  3. Regularly meet with faculty with research assignments and monitor research productivity.
  4. Make recommendations to the Dean regarding the allocation of research/laboratory space after consultation with relevant department chairs.
  5. Participate in the recruitment of faculty members with research assignments and make recommendation to the Dean.
  6. Oversee the research colloquia series, if also the Director of the Schnurmacher Institute for Vision research (SIVR).
  7. If also the Director of the SIVR, oversee its budget and prepare an annual report.
  8. Coordinate the visiting scientist program.
  9. Review requests for research release time by clinical faculty and make recommendations to the Dean.
  10. Coordinate programs and workshops, e.g., grant writing, that support basic and clinical research.
  11. Represent the College on matter related to research.
  12. Prepare an annual budget and monitor this budget with regard to research activities.
  13. Oversee the implementation of the institutionâs strategic plan that relates to research.
  14. Prepare an annual report on research activities and submit it to the Dean on June 15.
  15. Assist the Dean by assuming related duties and responsibilities related to research but not listed here.
  16. Oversee the administrative functioning of the Collegeâs Institutional Review Board (IRB).
  17. Oversee the administrative functioning of the Collegeâs Institutional Animal Care and Use Committee (IACUC).
  18. Act as the Institutionâs official signatory on all federal and non-federal research grant applications.
  19. Represent the institution to the Public Health Serviceâs Office of Research Integrity (ORI) in all matters regarding accusations of scientific misconduct.
  20. Administratively oversee technical and other support services for the collegeâs research mission (e.g., research computer service, electronic shop, machine shop, animal care facility).
