Alumni Association

The Alumni Association distributes $3,000 annually in scholarships to academically qualified students in financial need. The fund also provides short-term, immediate, interest-free emergency loans to students who have nowhere to go when their student loan funds do not arrive in time for the rent, electrical bill or tuition.

Donations to the Alumni Association also help us host the annual reception at the AAO annual meeting, put on financial planning seminars, Lunch & Learn and reunions. For the students, the Association hosts an orientation day for the incoming class and a champagne farewell toast to the graduating class. All gifts to the Alumni Association, a 501 (c)3 organization, are fully tax-deductible. Please make checks payable to The Alumni Association.

Locker Legacy

The Alumni Association Board and the College are pleased to announce The Locker Legacy Campaign.  A new initiative that will allow you to imprint your name or of a loved one in a student locker.  With only 300 new lockers in the new Student Center, your name will be permanently engraved in a 6X2 black zinc plate. Inscription space allows for 3 lines and 23 characters per line, centered. (Allow one character space for each letter, punctuation mark and space between words). Sponsoring a locker will allow you to leave your legacy at your alma matter.

Once your plaque has been placed, you will receive a notification of the exact location of the locker as well as an electronic photo.

We appreciate and value your support to SUNY Optometry.  Your contribution will provide support to new and existing student/alumni programs as well as the overall mission of the College.

Class of 1991 Pacesetter Award

The Vision and the Promise, the Campaign for SUNY College of Optometry

In an unprecedented step, the Board of Trustees of the Optometric Center of New York, the College’s foundation, approved a $10 million major gifts campaign in September 2009. To date, the foundation has received over $5  million in cash and pledges. Many pledges are in the form of bequests.  As the College completes 4 decades of service to the people of New York, now is the time to respond to new challenges and new opportunities to expand our patient care, educational and research efforts. With the combined efforts of alumni, faculty, staff and friends of the College, we will shape the future of vision care and scientific knowledge. Join us today in supporting “The Vision and the Promise.”

Alumni Campaign Committee  

In August 2011, a committee of SUNY Optometry alumni was created to support The Vision & The Promise Campaign.  These committed individuals are dedicated to making The Campaign a success.  Their main goal is to reach 100% alumni participation. The committee members are:  Julia Appel, O.D. ’91 (co-chair); Sherry Bass, O.D. ’80 (co-chair); Jaclyn Benzoni, O.D. ’09; Gregory DiSanto, O.D. ’84; Kristen Fry, O.D. ’98; Mitchell Horowitz, O.D. ’91; Scott Morrison, O.D. ’85; Ray Pirozzolo, O.D. ’09; Diane Russo, O.D. ’10; and Leonard Savedoff, O.D. ’79. These alumni have taken a leadership role and are committed to the mission of the College and the Alumni Association. Working with the Institutional Advancement Office, they will develop new strategies for increasing alumni support and engagement. To ensure that they get off to a great start, the entire committee has already made gifts or multi-year pledges to The Campaign.
