Biography

 

Dr. Arnold Sherman is the developer and Director of the Sports Vision Center at SUNY, State
College of Optometry.   He previously has been Director of the Laboratory of Amblyopia, Chief of the Vision Training Clinic at the University Optometric Center and co-founder of the Learning Disability Unit.  He has been awarded “Outstanding Professor in the Professional Program” on two occasions at the State College of Optometry.

Arnie is a founder and Past Chairman of the Sports Vision Sections of the American Optometric Association and actively involved in sports vision enhancement training and consultation for amateur and professional athletes in numerous sports.  He has been the Director of Vision Training Program for the Elite Athlete United States Olympic Committee.  He has consulted to the New York Knicks,  New York Jets, and New York Rangers, the U.S. Olympic Tennis, Fencing, Handball, Archer and Volleyball Teams, and served as a technical editor for World Tennis Magazine from 1984-1987, as well as Vision Consultant to St. John’s University.

He is a Diplomate in Binocular Vision and Perception, a Fellow of the College of Optometrists in Vision Development, a Fellow of the International College of Applied Nutrition, a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and a member of the American College of Sports Medicine and on the Board of Directors of the American Optometric Foundation.  He served as Chair, Binocular Vision and Perception Section of American Academy of Optometry and has been a member of the examining board for the American Academy of Optometry and the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. 

He has been adjunct professor to Hofstra University’s department of special education and is also a member of the professional Advisory boards for Little Village School, Garden City, NY and the Association for Children with Down’s Syndrome.

Dr. Sherman has published thirty eight professional papers as well as 4 book chapters and has presented over 500 lectures to major optometric congresses in the U.S.A., Israel, Canada, England and Australia as well as to sports medicine groups including the National Athletic Trainers Association, the U.S. Olympic Committee’s Elite Athlete and Winter Sports Medicine Program as well as numerous coach’s clinics.

He is listed in Who’s Who in North America, Who’s Who in the East, Who’s Who in American Health Care, and Outstanding Young Men in America and is a Distinguished Practitioner in the National Academies of Practice.

He has been a consultant to the Captain Kangaroo Series and the P.B.S. Series “The Brain” as well as appearing on national television including the Today Show and Good Morning America.

In 1991, Arnie was awarded “Sports Vision Optometrist of the Year by the American Optometric Association” for His Pioneering Efforts in the Development of and Contributions to the Field of Sports Vision.

In 1999, he was awarded the A. M. Skeffington Award by COVD for excellence in optometric writing.
