The Low Vision Externship at ABVI-Goodwill offers an opportunity for qualified optometry students to gain clinical and research experience in comprehensive Low Vision Rehabilitation. In addition to providing Low Vision evaluations on approximately 20 patients a week, the student will work with other disciplines, including Assistive Technology Instructors, Vision Rehabilitation Therapists, Orientation and Mobility Specialists, Social Workers, Occupational Therapists, Career and Training Specialists, and a Growth and Development specialist. The student will participate in research in collaboration with the University of Rochester and the Low Vision Rehabilitation Network. The student will assist in 3 preventive clinics providing care to uninsured individuals; Early Vision Screening, Project Eye Care and Vision Care for Kids. The student is invited to attend monthly Grand Rounds at the University of Rochester Flaum Eye Institute.
ABVI conducts collaborative research with the University of Rochester and the Low Vision Rehabilitation Network. As the incidence of vision loss increases with an aging population, Low Vision specialists are needed to meet the needs for evidence based vision rehabilitation.
