Program Description
The U.S. Military Academy Optometry Clinic provides ocular care to 4,000 cadets, and 28,000 active duty Soldiers, family members and retired military personnel in the West Point/geographic area. Due to the large patient population, the clinic sees an average of 30 patients per day.
The Optometry Clinic provides full scope optometric care. The extern obtains a great deal of experience conducting comprehensive eye exams and directs the exam to address the patient’s complaint and presenting symptoms and signs. Experience in managing acute ocular conditions is available on a daily basis due to coverage of Cadet sick call. Extern will receive extensive experience with soft contact lens fitting and evaluations. The diversity of the patient population allows exposure to pediatric, geriatric, and ocular diseases. However, most prominent are anterior segment disorders.

No housing for externs is available on West Point itself, but is available in nearby villages of Highland Falls, Newburgh, Cornwall, New Windsor and Fort Montgomery.

Directions to Clinic
By Car: take the Palisades Interstate parkway north until it ends at the Bear Mountain Bridge traffic circle. Proceed 3/4 of the way around the circle, following signs for West Point. You are now on Route 9W North. Stay on Route 9W for approximately 3 miles then exit onto Route 218 North. As you enter the village of Highland Falls (travel approximately 2 miles) on Route 218, continue to bear right, which will bring you to the Thayer Gate of West Point. At the gate, ask the guard for directions to Building 606, the Cadet Health Clinic. The Optometry Clinic is located on Floor 3M in Building 606. West Point is located about 55 miles from Manhattan.
