St. Albans is a hospital-based primary care facility that provides care to both outpatients and inpatients. The majority of patients examined are outpatients who tend to be elderly, male and have a host of systemic and ocular conditions. Glaucoma, macula degeneration and diabetic retinopathy are encountered daily as are a host of external conditions. Since there is only consultative ophthalmology at this facility (one-half day per month), all care is rendered, at least initially by Optometry. Many of the patients have some form of ocular disease, which leads to extensive experience in the diagnosis and management of ocular disease. Still much of the care provided is for comprehensive examinations that include refraction, dilation, and ordering of eyeglasses. The extern will use and become experienced with an electronic patient record system. Also, the extern has the opportunity to become familiar with a host of different technologies (Optic Nerve Imaging, Pachymetry, Fundus photography) and is encouraged to become proficient with each. The extern completes the examination form including the assessment and management plan for each patient and then discusses the case with the supervisor.
In addition to Dr. Fingeret, Dr. Maria Bosco is the attending on Fridays. Also, there will be one resident at the site. The St. Albans VA Primary Care and Extended Care Facility and VA Medial Center, Brooklyn are part of the New York Harbor Health Care System (NYHHCS). Free shuttle service is provided between the two facilities.
