Eye Clinic Services
This is a full scope optometric program with heavy emphasis on the diagnostic assessment and therapeutic management of ocular disease. The population includes, but is not restricted to a large number of glaucoma & diabetic patients.  The clinical faculty have geared the program toward highly motivated students, providing each student with the supervision necessary to achieve his/her potential.  Student externs provide direct, complete eye care to our patients including applanation tonometry, biomicroscopy, gonioscopy, binocular indirect ophthalmoscopy, anterior segment & fundus photography, Humphrey visual fields, ocular ultrasound, optical coherence tomography & fluorescein angiography.  Contact lens services are provided when medically indicated.  Student externs also have the opportunity to take part in comprehensive eye care at one of our satellite clinics, on-ward examinations & other clinics within the hospital, i.e., neurology.  Lectures & case discussions are performed weekly in the clinic.  Student externs are responsible for one short presentation near the end of their rotation.

Additional Requirements

  • Minimum competency for disease rotation
  • Car required
  • Site application physical exam required

Health Requirements
Students should contact the Externship Supervisor if interested in completing required physical at the VA.  It must be performed at least 1 month in advance of the rotation start date, with required lab tests.

Goal
To provide advanced didactic knowledge and concentrated clinical experience in a hospital setting.

Objectives

  • To develop clinical competency in basic and advanced examination techniques.
  • To become proficient in problem solving.
  • To develop competency in the use of ocular diagnostic and therapeutic pharmaceutical agents.
  • To gain exposure to advanced diagnostic procedures, i.e., fluorescein angiography, fundus photography, optical coherence, tomography and orbital ultrasonography.
  • To become familiar with commonly used medications and their ocular and systemic side effects.
