Program Description
The Pediatric and Primary Care Externship at Woodhull Medical and Mental Health Center offers a unique experience in a inner city acute care hospital setting.  The student will provide primary eye care and disease management to both ambulatory clinic patients and in-patients.  There is direct interaction between all aspects of medical and mental health care, and being the eye consultant requires the optometry student to interact with medical providers from other disciplines.

Approximately 75% of the patient encounters will be pediatric patients who range in age from newborns to 18 years old.  The remaining patient encounters will be from our general clinic where the patients range from 18 years old to geriatrics.     Pediatric examinations include primary eye care, binocularity testing, basic vision therapy, as well as disease management such as congenital abnormalities and tumors, congenital cataracts, and trauma.

The majority of our patients from the general clinic have multiple medical problems.  In addition to providing primary eye care there is a heavy emphasis on ocular diseases such as glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy and ocular trauma.  The student will have the opportunity to participate in a busy Retina Clinic, where they will have the opportunity to work closely with our Retina Specialist as well as observe retinal laser treatments and fluorescein angiographies.

This is a unique opportunity for an extern to see a large number of patients and to learn “hands on” clinical skills and critical thinking under the supervision of optometrists and ophthalmologists with diverse clinical backgrounds.
