Foundation Receives Grant for Indigent Program

The Optometric Center of New York, the SUNY College of Optometry's foundation, received a $25,000 grant from the Allene Reuss Memorial Trust to support vision care for indigent patients. This was the final installment of the original $50,000 grant.

Administered by the Office of Clinical Administration, the indigent patient fund supports eye examinations and low vision devices for underserved men, women and children from the New York metropolitan area.

Vision problems among minority populations are much greater in number than among other groups, according to Dr. Richard Soden, Vice President for Clinical Administration. "Last year, we had nearly 15,000 patient visits from low income and working poor families in New York," he said.

Since its founding in 1971, the College has had a long standing commitment to people who cannot afford vision care. In addition to its on-site services, the University Optometric Center provides care to the homebound and schoolchildren.
