To SUNY Optometry by Train

  • If you are arriving in New York City by train at either Grand Central Terminal or Pennsylvania Station, or by bus at the Port Authority Terminal, you can reach the College on foot very quickly. The new building is located two blocks west of Grand Central Station, nine blocks north of Penn Station, and three blocks east of the Port Authority Bus Terminal.
  • Subways: The IND Line (B, D, Q and F) stops across the street at 42nd Street and Sixth Avenue. The Flushing line (7 train) stops at 42nd Street and Fifth Avenue (outside the front door of the Main Branch of the New York Public Library). The IRT line (1 and 9) is a one-block walk west at the Times Square Station. The IRT line (4, 5 and 6) is a two-block walk east at Grand
    Central Terminal.
  • Buses: MTA buses, M42 (cross-town) and M104 (Upper West Side), stop nearby. Express commuter bus lines provide uptown service on Madison and Sixth Avenue and downtown
    service on Fifth Avenue.
  • Port Authority: The bus terminal, at 40th Street and Ninth Avenue, is a 7 minute walk west, or a bus ride on the cross-town 42nd Street routes. New Jersey Transit and other commuter lines leave from this terminal.
  • Penn Station: The LIRR to Long Island, as well as rail service to New Jersey and points south via Amtrak, is available at Penn Station, a 10 minutes walk or one subway stop away.
  • Path: Trains to New Jersey operated by the Port Authority Trans-Hudson leave from this terminus at 33rd Street and Sixth Avenue, adjacent to the Subway (B, D, F, N. R and Q lines).
  • Metro North: Westchester and Connecticut commuters can walk two blocks east to trains in Grand Central Terminal.
  • Consult New York City Transit Maps Homepage for maps of the NYC Subway System or the Manhattan Bus System

To NYC by Plane

If you are arriving in New York by air, there are several methods for travelling to the city from Kennedy, LaGuardia and Newark Airports.  The following is a list of the more convenient and accessible:

  • Greyline Bus Tours (212-775-7233).
  • New Jersey Transit Coaches Express Bus (201-762-5100)
  • Olympia Airport Express (718-622-7700; 212-964-6233; 908-354-3330)

  • From the Northwest (upstate New York), the New York Thruway (I-87 and I-287) leads to Manhattan's east and west sides
  • From the Northeast (MA, CT, etc.), the New England Thruway (I-95) also leads to the east or west sides
  • From the South (NJ, MD, etc.) the New Jersey Turnpike leads into the Holland Tunnel to lower Manhattan, or the Lincoln Tunnel to midtown Manhattan
  • Consult the Bridges and Tunnels Home Page for a map of bridges and tunnels into Manhattan.
