Research Interest

Patient-based research in presbyopia and contact lenses

My primary research interest is to better understand the mechanism of presbyopia (the age-related loss of focusing ability). By studying changes in the crystalline lens, ciliary body and geometry of the accommodative system with age, I hope to advance the development of future correction options for presbyopia.

Another area of interest is contact lenses. I am a site investigator for the Contact Lens Assessment in Youth (CLAY) and CLAY in College (CLAY inC.) studies and have also conducted research on contact lens materials and solutions, and multifocal lens designs.
Our clinical research facilities are equipped with a Zeiss Visante anterior segment OCT, Haag-Streit LENSTAR , Zeiss IOLMaster 500, B&L Orbscan and Zywave, Ultrasound Biomicroscope, A/B scan ultrasound system, Grand Seiko WAM 550 Autorefractor, PlusOptix PowerRefractor, as well as corneal pachymeters and topographers. Our research is funded through both industry and government grants.
