National Board of Examiners in Optometry Study- National Board of Examiners in Optometry (NBEO) selected the Center for Vision Care Policy to conduct an evaluation in order to determine the most common procedures performed and diagnoses made in a typical optometric practice. This information will be used by the NBEO when restructuring the current licensing examination future optometrists are required to take upon graduating from optometry school.
VA Hospital Study- The purpose of the study is to ascertain the extent to which optometry has been integrated in VA hospitals throughout the United States and will assess the availability of eye care services within VA hospitals and identify what services are actually being offered to patients. In addition, the study will evaluate the role of optometrists and the type of restrictions placed upon optometrists working within the VA system.
NYU Wagner Residency Program- The Center for Vision Care Policy is one of a handful of New York City health organizations selected by NYU's Robert F. Wagner Graduate School of Public Service to participate in its practical residency program. The program is available to a limited number of NYU Wagner students who work under the direct supervision of the Policy Center's Director working on a number of policy issues and projects pertaining to eye care practices and policy.
New York State Hospital Study- This study was designed to determine the extent to which optometry has been integrated within the hospital delivery system in New York State and to determine the types of services rendered by optometrists in governmental and non-governmental hospitals.
Quality of Care Review of Records: Inter-Rater Reliability Study- As managed care organizations (MCOs) move into vision care, the issue of quality measurement has grown in relevance. This paper assesses the inter-rater reliability of a managed vision care plan's record review instrument. This study attempts to duplicate the continuous quality improvement initiative set forth by these MCOs; 20 examiners using the review instrument developed by the respective MCO independently rated the records of 29 patients. Although the reviewers rated more than 86 percent of all records similarly, statistical analysis and further investigation deemed the instrument was inconsistent and thus unreliable in its measurement.
Lasik Study- The Center for Vision Care Policy and the Laser Eye Institute at the State School of Optometry are conducting a research study concerning patient satisfaction. The purpose of this study is to determine the level of service being rendered within the Lasik Department. Patient satisfaction scores from the SUNY Lasik Study will be compared with scores from competing private practice companies.
Assessment of consumer health websites- In 2001 the CVCP conducted an assessment of the accuracy of consumer health web sites' information regarding the role of optometrists in diagnosing and treating eye diseases. CVCP's findings were subsequently published in the November 2001 issue of the AOA's Optometry Journal (for full text, see Published Works section).
In the fall of 2003, the CVCP began re-evaluating the consumer health web sites first evaluated in 2001 to determine if significant changes/improvements had been made. The 2003 findings have been forwarded to the AOA and will be made available to the general public in 2004.
Optometric Workforce Databases- Various organizations such as the American Optometric Association (AOA), the Association of Regulatory Boards of Optometry (ARBO), and individual State Boards of Optometry have compiled optometric workforce databases. However, these databases are fraught with outdated and erroneous data and rarely contain similar data.
The purpose of this study is to illustrate the current problems with optometric workforce databases and provided suggestions that could improve the quality of optometric workforce databases.
