History of UEC
In 1956, a small group of dedicated optometrists and benefactors founded a non-profit health and professional education resource for the community - The Optometric Center of New York. Chartered by the Board of Regents of the State of New York, OCNY supported and directed the establishment of a vision care clinic which, in 1971, became the clinical arm of the new SUNY College of Optometry - University Eye Center.
The Optometric Center of New York stands as a shining example of what cooperation among visionary community leaders in education, business and philanthropy can accomplish. Its enduring mission is to sponsor and support professional scholarships and fellowships, vision science research and patient care at University Eye Center, with a special commitment to ensure that top quality vision care is accessible to all New Yorkers regardless of their ability to pay.
