Children With Special Needs

Regular eye examinations are an important aspect of pediatric health care. But how can parents or guardians of a child who cannot sit still or communicate what he or she can sees ensure that their child receives comprehensive eye examinations and if necessary, appropriate treatment?

University Optometric Center's Children with Special Needs Unit (CSN) was established as a specialty service of the Vision Therapy/Visual Rehabilitation Service to provide primary eye care and visual rehabilitation to children whose conditions make routine examinations and therapy difficult or impossible. It is staffed by a team of specially trained, dedicated optometrists who provide eye examinations in a caring, sensitive, non-threatening environment.

UOC's Special Needs Unit helps children affected by a wide range of conditions, such as:

  • Autism
  • Albinism
  • Cerebral palsy
  • Down's syndrome
  • Clumsy child syndrome
  • Congenital deformities
  • Spina bifida
  • Neuromuscular disorders
  • Genetic anomalies
  • Mental retardation
  • Congenital rubella syndrome
  • Cortical blindness

  • Legal blindness
  • Total blindness
