The Confucius Institute for Healthcare at SUNY College of Optometry is a joint project of SUNY College of Optometry, Wenzhou Medical University and the Chinese government through Confucius Institute Headquarters (also known as Hanban), a public institute affiliated with the Chinese Ministry of Education.

The Confucius Institute for Healthcare at SUNY College of Optometry provides Chinese Language and Culture courses and Tai Chi courses, holds a variety of events on language, culture and Healthcare, and is a center for Chinese language tests including HSK, HSKK and BCT tests.

Register for Basic or Intermediate E-Mandarin Classes

E-Mandarin 101 (Basic I)

This ten-week introductory course will allow beginners to gain foundational knowledge of Chinese phonetic system Pinyin, and learn basic vocabulary and grammatical structures to communicate in Chinese. Previous knowledge of Chinese language is not required. The focus will be on listening and speaking.

Upon course completion, students will have acquired the following knowledge and skills:

  • Pronounce Chinese in pinyin;
  • Differentiate four tones;
  • Use simple phrases and sentences to introduce oneself;
  • Ask basic questions related to name, nationality, language, and location;
  • Learn a few situational dialogues;
  • Terminology about common eye diseases in Chinese.

Three cohorts at different time are available for those from various states in the USA.

E-Mandarin 102 (Basic II)

This ten-week course is a continuation of E-Mandarin 101 and aims to help beginners build a solid foundation in speaking Chinese accurately and naturally, as well as further grammatical knowledge. The focus will be on training students to speak Chinese comfortably on both daily topics and eye examinations.

Prerequisite: E-Mandarin 101 or equivalent proficiency (know how to pronounce Pinyin, have basic knowledge about Chinese grammar, and know at least 80 basic words).

Upon course completion, students will have acquired the following knowledge and skills:

  • Appropriately greet patients and colleagues;
  • Describe symptoms using adjectives;
  • Talk about location and give directions;
  • Talk about time and date and schedule an appointment;
  • Examine patients’ eyesight;
  • Have small talks with colleagues;
  • Terminology specific to health care.

E-Mandarin 201 (Intermediate I)

This ten-week course is geared toward students with beyond foundational knowledge of Chinese language or have Chinese language skills by virtue of their heritage. Students will build their oral Chinese skills in order to prepare for work with Chinese-speaking patients. In addition to elements of language, the course incorporates discussion of Chinese culture with emphasis on the cultural aspects of patient care in China.

Prerequisite: E-Mandarin 102 or equivalent proficiency (one year’s study of Chinese).

Upon course completion, students will have acquired the following knowledge and skills:

  • Ask questions from Patient Health History and Registration Form;
  • Schedule or reschedule doctor appointments;
  • Examine patients’ eyes and give prescriptions;
  • Hold casual conversations with patients;
  • Give detailed instructions about a specific location;
  • Give routine vision tests and color tests.

E-Mandarin 202 (Intermediate II)

This course is a continuation of E-Mandarin 201. The course is designed to help students further improve their skills in performing eye examinations and discussing eye-related issues with Chinese-speaking patients. We aim to prepare students linguistically and cross-culturally for future work or study in Chinese-speaking clinical settings.

Prerequisite: E-Mandarin 201 or equivalent proficiency (two years’ study of Chinese).

Upon course completion, students will have acquired the following knowledge and skills:

  • Inquire about patients’ medical history and health conditions;
  • Examine patients ‘visions and give prescriptions;
  • Give patients’ advice on their diet habits;
  • Talk about the difference between eye pressure and blood pressure;
  • Talk about examination procedures such as dilation;
  • Explain treatment methods such as LASIK;
  • Explain the advantage and disadvantages of contact lenses.
