It is the mission of the Environmental Health and Safety Office (EHS) to provide a safe and healthy campus environment for students, faculty, staff, visitors and contractors. We accomplish our mission by maintaining compliance with Federal, State and Local rules and regulations. Our commitment to safety includes not only compliance with regulatory requirements, but also education, consultation and training services for the college community.

The Environmental Health and Safety Office is responsible for developing, implementing and overseeing environmental, health and safety programs that will positively impact working and learning conditions on campus. EHS functions as a consultant to all members of the college community, students, faculty and staff.

Training seminars are also provided periodically on a variety of EHS topics, and notifications of training are sent to the appropriate departments. If you need training in a specific area, please contact EHS.

If an employee or student of the College of Optometry has questions or concerns regarding any of the above mentioned programs or environmental health and safety issues in general, EHS is available for assistance.

The basic disclosure document required by OSHA’s Hazard Communication Standard is the Safety Data Sheet (SDS), which provides a uniform outline of the potential hazardous effects and the physical and chemical characteristics of each hazardous chemical, along with information about special precautions and controls necessary for use of the chemical.

It is the responsibility of each person purchasing chemicals to ensure that a current SDS is obtained from the manufacturer/vendor and kept on file for each hazardous chemical used in their work area. SDS must be made readily accessible to all members of the college community and may be obtained from the EHS Office in room 3M05 between the hours of 9:00am and 5:00pm and or anytime from the UPD 43rd St Desk.

Safety Data Sheets are also available electronically in SharePoint; in the Resources (Document Center), select the Safety Resources folder, then click on the Safety Data Sheet folder.
