COMMUNITY AND PEOPLE We promote the growth and development of all members of the College community. 2018 Educators’ Delegation to China SUNY Optometry faculty attend the Vision China Conference Nine members of the College’s faculty and staff were joined by practitioners from the New England College of Optometry, Illinois College of Optometry and the Pacific University College of Optometry for the 2018 Educators’ Delegation to China Program in July. While in China, they toured Wenzhou Medical College and its affiliated eye hospitals, attended the Vision China conference in Beijing and immersed themselves in Chinese culture, including participating in a traditional tea ceremony, visiting The Forbidden City and spending a day at The Great Wall. “It’s important for our faculty, staff and students to gain an appreciation of the different types of eye care delivery models around the world.” – Dr. Guilherme Albieri Faculty and Staff Recognition Dr. Diane Adamcyzk: Iron Mike Award Army colonel Dr. Jose E. Capo-Aponte, who received his MS and PhD from the College, presented Dr. Adamczyk, who serves as the College’s director of residency education, with the Iron Mike Award in recognition of her leadership and innovative work in neuro-optometric rehabilitation in June. She launched an affiliated residency program in neuro-optometry at Womack Army Medical Center in 2016. It is the first program within the Department of Defense to teach military optometrists how to support and rehabilitate wounded warriors with acquired brain injuries. Dr. Adamcyzk is also the New York State Optometric Association’s Optometric Educator of the Year for her “exemplary contributions as an educator, clinician, author and peer leader.” Dr. Alexandra Benavente-Pérez: Career Development Award The associate clinical professor received the Career Development Award from the American Academy of Optometry. The Academy will provide a maximum of $50,000 in direct costs per year for up to two years, potentially renewable once for a total of four years. The College will provide matching funds. The funding will help support her research, which is focused on developing a novel experimental model of progressive myopia to study the early retinal changes associated with high myopia. 28 SUNY OPTOMETRY
