EFFECTIVE FOUNDATIONAL SUPPORT The University Eye Center has a new seventh floor patient lounge thanks to Optometric Center of New York Board Chair Barbara Saltzman. President David A. Heath, Barbara Saltzman and Liduvina Martinez-Gonzalez The University Eye Center received a new laser for the sixth floor thanks to a generous grant of nearly $70,000 from the Optometric Center of New York. The laser has multiple uses, including glaucoma and cataracts. Dr. Warren Appleman, attending ophthalmologist at the University Eye Center, and Dr. Jennifer Gould, chief of advanced care, treat a patient with the new sixth floor laser “We are grateful for the support of our funders. They allow us to lead the field in education, patient care and research.” – Dawn Rigney Stavros Niarchos Foundation The Optometric Center of New York secured a $200,000 grant from the Stavros Niarchos Foundation in support of the new Center for Pediatric Eye Care. The funds will be used for construction, equipment and support of the College’s mission to provide transformative eye and vision care to the youngest and most vulnerable New Yorkers in a dynamic and innovative clinical care environment. The New York Community Trust The New York Community Trust provided a three-year, $200,000 grant for coordinated vision and social services for visually impaired older adults and children with multiple disabilities. The project will merge quality eye and vision care and social work expertise for the benefit of underserved populations in New York City. The College will collaborate with Stony Brook University’s School of Social Welfare to create, deliver and evaluate a comprehensive care coordination program. The outcomes-based project is designed to connect patients with appropriate health care services while providing continuity and effective follow up for vulnerable populations. Reader’s Digest Partners for Sight Foundation The Reader’s Digest Partners for Sight Foundation provided a $40,000 grant for the Queens and Manhattan Homebound Programs and a new social work care coordination component in partnership with Stony Brook University’s School of Social Welfare. More than 1,000 homebound older adults have access to high quality eye and vision care thanks to the foundation’s generosity over the past decade. 2018 scholarship recipients 32 SUNY OPTOMETRY
