Alumni Scholarship

What does receiving this award or scholarship mean to you?
Receiving the Alumni Scholarship is an honor for me, I am thrilled to be recognized for my grades and by the Admissions Committee at SUNY Optometry. This award has given me reassurance that my dedication and hard work are valued and appreciated, and will help me continue to succeed in the program.

What drew you to the field of optometry?
Optometry has been on my radar since the fifth grade when I decided I wanted to be any eye doctor. From there, I began researching SUNY in high school, shadowing, working in a private practice, and grew an immense passion for the field. Family history of ocular disease and personal visits to the optometrist also contributed to my appreciation for optometry. I value the personal connection many optometrists have with their patients, and look forward to making the same type of relations with my future patients.

What are your plans following graduation?
After completing the program in 2025, I plan to practice in Upstate New York and serve the communities in need of an optometrist. I would ideally like to practice in a private setting, and eventually open a practice of my own in a community in need.

What was your most transformative experience during optometry school?
The learning curve in optometry school is unique compared to anything I have experienced prior to starting the program. After completing my first year, I returned to work at a private practice for the summer where I was previously employed, and I was able to perform skills, work with patients, and converse with doctors on a new level. This was the most rewarding experience to date.

What advice would you give incoming or prospective optometry students?
For incoming or prospective optometry students I would recommend being proficient in time management. Time management is what has given me the opportunity to succeed, without it, keeping a study and practice schedule can be difficult and may cause overwhelming feelings. This is a tough program, but a manageable one if you have the drive and will power to succeed. You can do anything you put your mind to, especially if it is something you really want!
