President David Troilo

Dr. David Troilo is the newly appointed President of the SUNY College of Optometry, having been selected by the State University of New York Board of Trustees as the fourth president to serve the state’s only college of optometry.

Before stepping into this role, Dr. Troilo joined SUNY College of Optometry as Professor, Vice President, and Dean for Academic Affairs in July 2008. As the chief academic officer, he oversaw the professional degree program in optometry and the graduate degree programs (PhD and MS) in vision science. His responsibilities also included faculty development, residency training programs, library services, and continuing professional education.

Dr. Troilo has made advancing research at the College a priority, developing collaborative initiatives in basic, translational, and clinical eye and vision research. In collaboration with the University Eye Center, which sees 60,000 patient encounters annually, and clinical research faculty, he co-founded the College’s Clinical Vision Research Center (CVRC) in 2013. Since then, the CVRC has conducted more than 100 clinical studies and trials that enhance patient care.

Dr. Troilo is a fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and The Association for Research in Vision and Ophthalmology (ARVO). His principal research interest is the visual control of eye growth and the mechanisms of myopia development. His research has been funded by the NIH and industry sponsors for over 30 years.

Dr. Troilo is a graduate of SUNY State College at Oswego and earned his Ph.D. in Biology from the City University of New York at the City College of New York. He held post-doctoral research fellowships at the University Laboratories of Physiology at the University of Oxford and the Department of Neurobiology and Behavior and the Department of Psychology at Cornell University.

Elements of a Presidential Installation

An inauguration is a longstanding academic tradition that formally installs a new president and marks the beginning of their leadership. This milestone is typically held during the president’s first year in office and sets the direction for his initial term of office.

Platform Party

The platform party usually consists of officials and dignitaries who speak during the ceremony. This may include select guests who share greetings, government officials, institutional representatives, and other constituents.

Academic Procession

Delegates from SUNY campuses, the Chancellor, members of the board, College faculty, and selected dignitaries join an academic procession similar to commencement. Procession participants wear academic regalia symbolizing the academic degrees they hold and the institution from which they received their highest degree.

College Mace

The ceremonial mace is used by Colleges and Universities to symbolize scholarship and integrity. It is used to
signify that the proceedings of an event have an official sanction and is only present when the president and other
presiding dignitaries are in attendance. SUNY College of Optometry’s mace reflects the three pillars of our mission – education, research, and service. Commissioned in honor of the 50th Anniversary in 2021, it further incorporates elements related to optometry and the patients we serve in the heart of New York City.

The mace was designed and fabricated by silversmith, Preston Jones.

Presidential Investiture

An investiture is a time-honored formal ceremony and academic tradition that marks the installation of a new college president. Rooted in centuries-old customs, the ceremony symbolizes a transfer of responsibility that brings together the SUNY Optomtery family to celebrate our foundation as an academic health center focused education, research, and patient care. It is a time to reflect on our mission and values while we look toward the future we wish to build. During this ceremony, overseen by the SUNY Chancellor, the new president is given the authority and symbols of office including the chain of office and/or ceremonial mace.

Separately, we wanted to create an Advisors Landing Page for our Enrollment Campaign. Admissions is a separate audience. Is it easier to create these forms in MailChimp as that is where we want the data to feed. It looks like MailChimp can handle this directly. It seems like we have issues with the JotForm to MailChimp since we are exceeding limits and such.
