Pat Cummings Scholarship Columbia Class of 1936 Award for Academic and Clinical Achievement

What does receiving this award or scholarship mean to you?
I am very proud, honored, and grateful to receive this award, and it is a nice conclusion to the last 4 years at SUNY.

What drew you to the field of optometry?
My interest in optometry originated when I was in elementary school when I received my first pair of glasses. Being able to see the world so clear was amazing and life-changing. As an optometrist I hope to provide that same feeling to my patients and to help them in any way I can.

What are your plans following graduation?
I will be doing a residency in Ocular Disease at the Bascom Palmer Eye Institute in Miami, FL.

What was your most transformative experience during optometry school?
My 4th year clinical externships have played a huge role in my development. All the doctors I’ve worked with in house, at NYU, Bellevue Hospital, and Compton Eye Associates were nothing short of amazing and have played a huge role in the doctor I am becoming.

What advice would you give incoming or prospective optometry students?
My advice would be work hard, but enjoy spending time with your classmates/colleagues. You made it to optometry school for a reason and if everyone could do it then there wouldn’t be a need for optometrists.
