Welcome to SUNY College of Optometry’s NYC program. Explore the page below to learn more about applying to SUNY Optometry and all that we have to offer including an outstanding optometric education, diverse clinical experiences, and exposure to a robust research program. The University Eye Center, the on-campus patient-care facility, sees over 60,000 patient visits a year across multiple clinical services including primary care, infant and pediatric care, vision rehabilitation, ocular disease and imaging, specialty contact lenses, traumatic brain injury and more.
The goal of the four-year doctor of optometry (OD) program is to graduate first-rate optometrists who are knowledgeable, clinically competent, professional, and ethical. We prepare our students for the future of optometric practice by teaching them to think critically as life-long learners who understand the scientific basis of the profession and who can apply evidence based practice to patient care. With built in flexibility, students have opportunities to customize their learning to their interests with advanced topics through electives, selection of clinical assignments, career development sessions, as well as certificate and microcredential programs. Advanced standing options are available for qualified students.
SUNY College of Optometry considers the whole student during the admissions process. A high undergradate GPA and high OAT score are only two of the factors used in deciding if a candidate is a good fit. The Admissions Committee also considers the quality of the undergraduate institution, type of program pursued, progression of grades, extracurricular activities, leadership and community involvment, communication and interpersonal skills, letters of recommendation, personal interview, and commitment to the profession. Only applicants with the strongest credentials will be invited to interview for the limited number of seats available in the OD program. Out-of-state and foreign residents are encouraged to apply; we do not discriminate against out-of-state residents for admission. Most out-of-state US citizens are eligible for in-state tuition after one year at SUNY Optometry.
