New York, NY—SUNY College of Optometry Distinguished Teaching Professor Sherry Bass, OD, ’80, has been named among the 2021 Most Influential Women in Optical released this week by Vision Monday. Dr. Bass was selected for the Above and Beyond category of influential women who have led the way in giving back to the vision care industry, their patients, and their community.
“I have helped to train close to 100 residents. And I have examined thousands of patients throughout the years, helping them to see better and get the treatment they deserve,” said Dr. Bass of her lifetime of work in the field which includes operating a private practice.
From SUNY Optometry student and graduate to clinician-educator, Dr. Bass has served as a dedicated member of the College’s faculty and clinic for over 40 years. Her contributions to optometric knowledge and practice include research in the genetics of hereditary retinal disorders and imaging technology to understand the pathophysiology of retinal disorders. She has presented more than 500 lectures at national and international meetings on these topics. A highly respected practitioner, Dr. Bass cares for patients in the retina clinic at the College’s University Eye Center, where she supervises residents with ocular disease concentrations.
In addition to her work at SUNY Optometry, Dr. Bass currently serves as a consultant to the Office of Professional Discipline for New York State and has chaired accreditation visits for residency programs across the United States for the Accreditation Council on Optometric Education (ACOE). An author of more than 150 publications, including book chapters, she serves on the editorial boards of Optometry and Vision Science, Optometric Office, The Review of Optometry, and Optometry Times.
A member of the American Optometric Association for 45 years, Dr. Bass is a Fellow of the American Academy of Optometry and the College of Optometrists in Vision Development. She is also a former chair and member of the New York State Board for Optometry. Dr. Bass remains an active member of the SUNY Optometry Alumni Association serving as a board member and mentor.
