Highlights from White Coat Ceremony for the Class of 2020

May 23, 2018

SUNY Optometry hosted its annual White Coat Ceremony on Thursday, May 17. Members of the Class of 2020 celebrated the milestone in their journey to become doctors in front of family and friends.

White Coat ceremonies have become ubiquitous at professional health education institutions in recent years. Designed to mark the transition students make from the largely didactic portion of their education to the clinical focus, it is a celebration of what these second year OD students have accomplished and a recognition of the critical work they will undertake as health care providers.

Speakers included Dr. Michael McGovern, chief medical officer of the University Eye Center; Ms. Jan Rose, member of the Optometric Center of New York board of trustees; Dr. Suresh Viswanathan, chair of biological and vision sciences; Dr. Richard Madonna, chair of clinical education; Dr. Denise Whittam, alumni association president; and Ms. Nicole Mercho, president of the Class of 2020.
