Here’s a look at some of the recent activities of our faculty:
The Research Foundation of SUNY has secured an option agreement with a venture capital firm to create a new company to leverage technology created by Dr. Stewart Bloomfield to develop drugs to treat degenerative disorders of the retina.
Dr. Ken Ciuffreda and Ms. Diana Ludlam gave a week of lectures, as well as small group research meetings, at the Karolinska Institute in Stockholm to optometry, ophthalmology and other clinicians and vision scientists. Dr. Ciuffreda also served as the ‘opponent” (similar to a external examiner) for a PhD dissertation on the binocular advantages in reading in both visually-normal individuals and in those with mild traumatic brain injury (mTBI). This included providing a 30 minute overview lecture on the dissertation topic, and its importance, as well as formal questioning of the student. Dr. Ciuffreda and Ms. Ludlam also presented four hours of lectures, with some demonstrations, on the topic of vision care, both diagnostic and therapeutic, in those with mTBI. The group of 60 attendees included optometrists, ophthalmologists, physiatrists, orthopedists, students and others.
Drs. Mark Rosenfield and Kenneth Ciuffreda were recently awarded a $350,000 grant from the Verizon Foundation to examine the impact of vision screenings using mobile technology in underserved communities.
