The College of Optometrists has appointed Mark Rosenfield MCOptom, PhD, FAAO as the new Editor-in-Chief of its leading international vision science and optometry journal, Ophthalmic & Physiological Optics (OPO), as David Elliott FCOptom, PhD, FAAO steps down from the role after 11 years. Elliott is a Professor of Clinical Vision Science at the University of Bradford in the United Kingdom.

A member of the OPO editorial board for over five years, Rosenfield is a professor at the State University of New York (SUNY) College of Optometry. His research interests include binocular vision, digital eye strain, and the measurement and etiology of refractive error. He is the author of three textbooks, 16 book chapters, and over 110 peer-reviewed publications, and has served as a topical editor for Optometry and Vision Science.

“I am delighted and honored to be taking over the role of Editor-in-Chief of OPO. In particular, to be following such esteemed individuals as Neil Charman, Bernard Gilmartin (my PhD advisor), and Christine Dickinson,” said Rosenfield. “Professor Elliott will be a hard act to follow, given the outstanding job that he has done with the journal.”

For more than a decade, Professor Elliott has led OPO to its current position as the world’s leading international optometry research journal, commissioning cutting-edge feature issues and guest editorials, as well as attracting original research and systematic reviews of the highest quality. OPO has been the top-ranked international optometry research journal in the world for the past five years.

Welcoming the appointment, Ian Humphreys, CEO of The College of Optometrists said: “We are delighted that Professor Rosenfield will be joining OPO as Editor-in-Chief. Taking over from Professor Dave Elliott, it’s exciting to have another experienced educator, researcher, and clinician lead the publication. At a time when both the WHO and UN General Assembly have identified the need for increased investment in eye health research, his vital insight will help us ensure that we continue to make OPO a home for high quality, original research in vision science and optometry. I also want to thank and acknowledge Professor Elliott for his invaluable work in transforming OPO into the leading international optometry research journal.”

Rosenfield said he is looking forward to the challenge of taking OPO onto the next level. “I am eager to promote the dramatic advances in knowledge that are taking place in our field.” His first issue as Editor-in-Chief will be published in September of this year.
