Life at SUNY Optometry for the Class of 2022 began with a three-day orientation that kicked off on Wednesday, August 15. Session topics included academic transitions, student engagement, and a new program, SUNY Spotlights, where the new class was divided into groups to brainstorm ways to get involved both on campus and in the optometric community.

Members of the Class of 2021 welcomed their peers by sponsoring fundraising happy hours on the first and third nights of orientation. There was also a SUNY Students Take New York evening activity that offered the chance to kayak on the Hudson, rollerskate in Brooklyn and bar hop in midtown Manhattan.

Guest speakers and alumni were invited to meet and prepare the new students for their four years at the College, including a welcoming toast by the new president of the alumni association Dr. Anna Maria Fernandez, ’85. Optometric Center of New York trustee Dr. Mark Feder, ’83; Dr. Danielle Feder, ’17; and Dr. Jason Compton, ’05 also provided remarks. Ms. Marci McCall and psychologists from the New York State of Health spoke on self-care methods for maintaining good mental health during periods of academic stress.

The College community looks forward to meeting and working with the Class of 2022.
