Class of ’21 alumnus takes top honor with 2023 AAO Hopkins Comprehensive Eye Care Residency Award

New York, NY – The State University of New York (SUNY) College of Optometry proudly announces that Dr. Stephen Dellostritto, ’21, R’23 is the recipient of the 2023 AAO Hopkins Comprehensive Eye Care Residency award. This top honor was created to promote the practice and development of optometry by providing incentive and financial support to talented residents who demonstrate a passion and commitment to practice, research, and education.

“I am honored to receive the 2023 AAO Hopkins Comprehensive Eye Care Residency award. As the most recent SUNY College of Optometry combined graduate resident, I am grateful for the opportunities I’ve pursued and eagerly anticipate further growth at the college,“ Dr. Dellostritto noted. “Engaging in myopia research has been fulfilling, and I look forward to delving deeper into the complexities of on and off neural pathway effects in myopia.”

Dr. Mitchell Dul, a professor in the in the Department of Biological and Vision Sciences, has seen Dr. Dellostritto’s growth at SUNY Optometry and also noted, “Dr. Dellostritto’s commitment to excellence in the graduate program was exemplary. It provided him with a foundation for impactful future development.”

For over ten years, this award has recognized individuals for taking the extra step to receive additional training to advance themselves and our profession in the areas of comprehensive/primary care, family practice, or ocular disease optometry.

“I am very proud of Dr. Dellostritto for his accomplishments. The combined residency/graduate program is a rich program, but Dr. Dellostritto also established himself as an accomplished researcher with multiple publications and presentations to first tier conferences,” said program supervisor Dr. Joan Portello, ‘86. “He did this whilst being a reliable and outstanding clinician. Dr. Dellostritto will no doubt continue to be a bright star in the optometric community.”

Originally from Hasbrouck Heights, NJ, Dr. Dellostritto completed his undergraduate work at Ramapo College of NJ, majoring in Biology and minoring in neuroscience. He currently serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor at SUNY Optometry. He is the third SUNY Optometry alumnus to receive this award, after Dr. Gloria Chow, R’13 received the award in 2013 and Dr. Matthew Bovenzi, ’14, R‘15 achieved the same honor in 2015.
